In any sort of emergency situation; here are some of my go-to natural remedies that I would NOT want to be without!! This is NOT an extensive list, just some of the ones that came to mind first. Be sure to leave a comment below with what you would add to this list, or any questions you have to add!
Lavender Essential oil: For calming and stress reduction – It heals burns and cuts, relieves insomnia, reduces stress and anxiety and is a powerful antihistamine. You can also use it for bug bites, bruises, sleep deprivation, allergies, inflammation, sunburns, lice, and more. It is soothing to skin irritations and takes the pain out of bee stings, hives and other allergic skin reactions. My favorite first-aid use is on burns; that stinging/burning sensation is almost immediately reduced, if not completely gone in my experience with this essential oil!
Cinnamon herb: Great for chronic diarrhea – approx. 1/4 tsp. in warm milk with honey will do the trick. Good in general for flatulence and indigestion.
Plantain herb: Plantaga major (common, or broadleaf), Plantago lanceolata (ribwort or narrow leaf) are used interchangeably. Plantain was called English man’s foot by American Indians, because it came over from Europe and followed the English with every step they took. Even if you know nothing about this plant you could recognize it easily by the seed heads that pop in your yard just a couple days after mowing. Pictured is the broadleaf type. This pesky weed is one of my favorite first-aid herbs. Almost everywhere I go I can almost always find this plant growing nearby. Even in cities (in medians and sidewalk cracks), even in the winter (up near buildings, under evergreen bushes). The alterative properties of Plantain makes it an amazing blood purifier. If I get stung, whether it be by a bumblebee, wasp, sweat bee, mosquito, I just grab a couple leaves of this handy plant, chew it up, and spit it out right on to the bite/sting! May seem a bit vulgar, but the saliva helps to break down the constituents and allow your body to absorb the properties that much faster. The herb draws out the poison, stops bleeding, and begins healing the wound while reducing inflammation as soon as it is applied. The stinging sensation is almost immediately reduced, if not gone completely. There are many other uses of this plant, but this is my favorite.
Garlic herb: Helps prevent colds, lower blood pressure, acts as an antibiotic and antiparasitic. It is also anti-viral and antibacterial. Add to and extra 4 cloves to soup when you are feeling a cold coming on to nip it in the bud. If you struggle with the strong taste, and love your friends and family – you can always get the odorless capsules.
Cayenne Pepper: Great for almost everything! Use ground in cuts and burns as an astringent, antispasmodic and painkiller. In wounds it works to stop bleeding and stop the synapses from firing [thereby deadening the pain]. Taken internally it stimulates the heart and circulation, helps prevent heart attack, strokes, colds and flues and arthritis. Used as an oil topically, it helps sore joints. Combined with plantain, it will draw out foreign objects.
Thieves Essential Oil: a combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary. This blend supports the immune system and is a disinfectant! Useful as a household cleaner, it is non-toxic and supports health and wellness while keeping you clean.
Clove herb and oil: For pain and toxins. This oil helps to relieve toothaches, headaches, and other pain and can be used to draw toxins and infections from the body. It also aids in relieving nausea or constipation. If you don’t have clove oil, but have it powdered in your spice rack, just mix some powder in a little olive oil [or vegetable oil on hand] and soak a cotton roll in it to apply between the cheek and gum of your tooth ache. It helps fight infection and numbs the area, reducing the pain.
Lemon essential oil: For cleansing and mood elevation. This oil is known for its cleansing ability. Add a few drops to a gallon of water to purify it. It is also great for intestinal parasites, dissolves petrochemicals from your body, effective for colds & flu, helps your digestive system and liver work, helps reduce stress and fatigue, calm upset stomachs, is effective for gout, sore throat, and is a disinfectant and an antiseptic.
Frankincense Essential oil: Frankincense oil enhances the effects of other oils, helps reduce inflammation, relieve headaches, and supports skin tissue recovery. It also helps to soothe hyperactivity and restlessness and facilitates clarity and focus of the mind. This oil has many properties that make it a great addition to your daily skin care routine to promote healthy, young skin.
Peppermint tea and essential oil: For indigestion and cooling. This essential oil is effective for treating nausea and digestive issues, allergies, menstrual problems, reduces fever, increases alertness and focus, and increases oxygen absorption. It is great for headaches or any muscle aches or pains and is also a catalyst when mixed with other oils. Peppermint is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, can be used for shock, colds, colic, and heartburn.
Dandelion: These spring greens are a fabulous, yet gentle, detoxing herb and PACKED with vitamins and minerals, including; vitamins A, B, C, D, E, P, B1, B2, B12, iron and potassium, etc. The roots are mildly laxative while the leaves are often used as a digestive tonic. The whole plant is traditionally used as a powerful alterative, and diuretic, helping to clear the body of excess water and salt and chronic toxic conditions. The whole plant is edible and the flowers would make a darling addition to your spring salad!
Oregano essential oil: For natural immune system support. This oil is effective in treating bacterial infections and yeast infections, relieves back and joint pain and inflammation, colds & flu, kills warts & skin tags and athlete’s foot, and is an effective cleanse for GI health.
Melaleuca essential oil: For soothing and healing. This oil can be used as a first aid ointment, useful for skin irritations, bug bites, athlete’s foot, eczema and psoriasis. It aids in immune function and supports against throat and respiratory pathogens, and helps with slivers in the skin.
Turmeric herb: Often referred to as an herbal aspirin; tissue injuries or irritations, infections, fevers, allergies, sinusitis, gastritis, colitis, hepatitis, kidney disease, arthritis, dermatitis, phlebitis, tuberculosis, and autoimmune disorders. Dissolves blood clots and arrests bleeding. Purifies blood and relieves pain. To relieve menstrual cramps heat 1 tsp. turmeric powder and 1 tsp almond oil in 1 cup warm milk.
