Let’s talk about Alfalfa. It’s not just for livestock! This is one of my favorite herbs for daily wellness support for anyone and everyone. It is packed with trace minerals and vitamins and keeps us lean and nourished. Alfalfa herb is found in many of the Shawnee Moon formulas and as you read more about it you will begin to understand why. Latin name: medicago sativa
Origin: Western Asia and eastern Mediterranean region
Part Used: aerial parts (leaves, petals, flowers, sprouts)
Taste: cool, sweet, astringent
Constituents: Alfalfa contains eight enzymes; lipase, amylase, coagulase, emulsin, invertase, peroxidate, pectinase and protase. Contains vitamine U, chlorophyll, vitamins A, E, B6, K and D. Also contains trace amounts of calcium, iron, manganse, potassium, phosphorus, chlorine (chloride), sodium, silicon magnesium, 18% protein, coumarins, isoflavonoids, saponins, b-sitoterol, campesterol, stigamsterol, chlorophyll, carotene, biotin, tryptophan.
Supports: The body’s ability to assimilate protein, calcium and other nutrients. Supports the entire gastrointestinal system gently aiding digestion, and stimulating normal elimination of excess toxins. Helps to alkalize the body. Because of it’s ability to support healthy elimination, it can promote normal skin health, support normal blood glucose levels, normal blood pressure, and stimulate normal water retention. As a nutritive herb it is a general blood tonic that nourishes the body with all of its vitamins and trace minerals. Stimulates a normal, healthy appetite.
Notes: Alfalfa was named by the Arabs, meaning “father of all foods”. They were convinced that it was beneficial to the health and strength of the the body. They first discovered health benefits by noting positive effects on their prized Arabian horses who they fed alfalfa hay to. The Ancient Greeks used alfalfa to treat a variety of diseases including bladder and kidney conditions. Traditional Chinese Medicine [TCM] uses alfalfa for kidney stones. Alfalfa has been used as human food and herbal medicine for at least 1,500 years.
