Fennel – foeniculum vulgare – A wonderful carminative, aromatic, antispasmodic and hepatic tonic, this native of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean is often recommended for flatulence and colic as it stimulates the digestion and appetite. It promotes healthy secretions of the bile and gastrointestinal tracts to relieve gas and digestion discomfort.
Peppermint – Mentha piperita – This Mediterranean native is commonly known to aid digestion and relieve gastrointestinal distress. It is antiseptic, aromatic, antibacterial, carminative, antispasmodic, anti-emetic, anti-insomnia and an expectorant, stimulant and stomachic. It also contains antioxidants that have been linked to help prevent cancer, heart disease and other diseases associated with aging. In general, this readily available, on the evasive side, plant is very useful in relaxation, helping ease nausea, fights bacteria causing tooth decay and gingivitis, has been used for acid reflux/heart burn, chills, colic, gas, headaches. Lessens the amount of time food spends in the stomach by stimulating gastric juices.
Ginger – Zingiber offininale – This is a common spice that is often used in baking. (Ginger Snaps, anyone?) But most people have no idea the beautifully tropical plant this useful root sports above ground. You’d be surprised when you Google “zingiber officinale flower image” at the fancy flowers you will see! This is an effective carminative, analgesic, sedative, stimulant, aromatic, sialagogue, orexigenic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It is commonly used for nausea and motion sickness, as well as poor circulation, fevers, colds, congestion and headache. Often mixed with laxatives to help relieve the ‘gripping’ commonly associated with strong laxatives.
