Alteratives are plants, herbs or medicines that purify the blood, eliminates wastes from the entire body, and help the organs to assimilate nutrients.

An alterative internally typically supports and nourishes the elimination tract/organs. They promote wellness in the filtration organs of the body; the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, bladder, etc.

Topically, alteratives can be cleansing to the skin, and support drawing out ickies from wounds and open sores. This can be seen in the gentle drawing properties of plantain specifically after venomous bites or stings.
